Grigorievskoe Gorge is a scenic mountain gorge on the northern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan. Located near the village of Grigorievka, the gorge extends into the Kungey Ala-Too mountain range and is known for its forested slopes, mountain river, alpine pastures and three mountain lakes.
The gorge is one of the most accessible natural attractions on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul and is commonly visited together with nearby Semenovskoe Gorge. In summer, visitors can also find seasonal yurt camps and horseback-riding opportunities in the valley.
About Grigorievskoe Gorge
Grigorievskoe Gorge is also known by its Kyrgyz name Chon-Ak-Suu. Other English and Russian transliterations include Grigoriev Gorge and Grigoryevskoye Gorge.
The gorge follows the Chon-Ak-Suu/Grigorievka river valley from the northern shore of Issyk-Kul toward the Kungey Ala-Too mountains.
Its landscape changes noticeably as the road climbs: the lower gorge has forested slopes and river scenery, while higher sections open into alpine meadows, pastures and mountain landscapes.

Where Is Grigorievskoe Gorge?
The entrance to Grigorievskoe Gorge is near Grigorievka village on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul.
A turn from the Balykchy–Karakol road leads into the gorge. The lower approach is relatively accessible, while the road becomes rougher farther into the mountains.
Grigorievka is approximately 35 km from Cholpon-Ata, making the gorge convenient to visit from the northern Issyk-Kul resort area.
What Makes Grigorievskoe Gorge Special?
Tien Shan Spruce Forests
The lower and middle sections of the gorge are characterized by dense stands of Tien Shan spruce.
The forested landscape gives Grigorievskoe Gorge a noticeably greener appearance than many of the drier mountain landscapes around Issyk-Kul.
Mountain River
The Chon-Ak-Suu River runs through the gorge, creating a natural route deeper into the mountains.
The river becomes particularly impressive during periods of snowmelt and higher summer water levels.
Three Mountain Lakes
One of the defining attractions of Grigorievskoe Gorge is its series of three mountain lakes.
They are generally described as the Lower, Middle and Upper Lakes. The lower lake is easier to reach, while the higher lakes require continuing farther into the gorge by road or on foot.
Alpine Pastures
Higher in the gorge, the forest gradually gives way to open mountain meadows and seasonal jailoo pastures.
During summer, horses and other livestock can be seen grazing, while seasonal yurts provide visitors with an opportunity to experience the traditional mountain pasture environment.
The Three Lakes of Grigorievskoe Gorge
The three mountain lakes are among the main reasons travelers continue beyond the lower part of the gorge.
Lower Lake
The Lower Lake is in the more accessible section of the gorge and is suitable for travelers making a shorter visit.
Middle Lake
The Middle Lake is located farther up the valley near the At-Jailoo pasture area.
Upper Lake
The Upper Lake lies higher in the gorge and requires more time to reach. Beyond the upper lake, the landscape becomes increasingly alpine, with forests giving way to open high-altitude meadows.
Because road conditions vary, the upper part should not be treated as equally accessible to the lower gorge.
Hiking in Grigorievskoe Gorge
Grigorievskoe Gorge offers opportunities for short walks as well as longer mountain routes.
For a simple visit, travelers can walk around the lower gorge, follow the river and explore the surrounding forest and pasture areas.
More ambitious routes continue toward the upper lakes and mountain passes.
The route connecting Grigorievskoe and Semenovskoe gorges is also used by more active travelers, but road and trail conditions can change with weather and snowmelt.
Grigorievskoe Gorge and Semenovskoe Gorge
Grigorievskoe and Semenovskoe gorges are often visited together because of their proximity and similar landscape.
Grigorievskoe Gorge focuses on:
- Chon-Ak-Suu River
- three mountain lakes
- spruce forests
- At-Jailoo pastures
- Grigorievka access
Semenovskoe Gorge focuses on its own valley, river, landscapes and attractions.
