Barskoon Gorge is a dramatic mountain valley on the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, known for its waterfalls, spruce forests, mountain scenery and routes leading deep into the Tien Shan.
The gorge follows the Barskoon River from the southern shore toward the high mountain plateaus. Its lower section is easily combined with a visit to the southern shore of Issyk-Kul, while the upper valley leads into more remote high-altitude terrain.
About Barskoon Gorge
Barskoon Gorge, also written Barskaun Gorge, lies in the Terskey Ala-Too mountains of eastern Kyrgyzstan.
The valley has long served as a natural route between the Issyk-Kul basin and the high mountain areas farther south. Today, travelers mainly visit for the waterfall cascades, hiking, horseback riding and mountain scenery.
The gorge is also connected with the nearby village of Barskoon, but the village and gorge should be treated as separate entities.

Where Is Barskoon Gorge?
Barskoon Gorge is on the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, near the villages of Barskoon and Tamga.
The entrance to the gorge is reached from the southern-shore highway. From there, a road follows the Barskoon River into the mountains. The gorge is approximately 90 km from Karakol by road.
The waterfalls are not directly in Barskoon village. Visitors need to continue into the gorge to reach them.
What Makes Barskoon Gorge Special?
The landscape changes as you travel farther into the valley.
The lower gorge contains open slopes and vegetation, followed by areas of Tien Shan spruce forest. Higher up, the forest becomes thinner and gives way to alpine landscapes and high mountain terrain.
This makes Barskoon particularly interesting because a relatively short excursion from Issyk-Kul can take visitors through several distinct mountain environments.
Barskoon Waterfalls
The most famous attraction in the gorge is its cascade of waterfalls.
Different maps and tourism sources use somewhat different names and arrangements for the individual falls. Commonly mentioned names include:
- Tears of the Leopard
- Manas Bowl
- Champagne Splashes
- Aksakal’s Beard
The waterfalls are fed by mountain and glacial water and are reached by trails following tributaries of the Barskoon River.
The lower sections can be visited on a relatively short walk, while reaching higher waterfalls requires more climbing and better physical fitness.
Hiking in Barskoon Gorge
Barskoon offers several levels of hiking.
A short excursion can focus on the lower waterfall area, while longer hikes continue farther up the valley.
The upper sections become steeper and more demanding. Trails can include loose rock, uneven ground and slippery surfaces near the waterfalls, so proper footwear is important.
For visitors who want a longer mountain experience, the upper Barskoon valley provides access toward the high plateaus and mountain passes.
Horseback Riding
Horseback riding is another way to explore Barskoon Gorge.
Local tourism operators and guides can arrange horse excursions into the valley, allowing visitors to travel farther from the road without making the entire journey on foot.
For a Doctour itinerary, horseback riding should be presented as an actual tour activity only when it is included in the booked itinerary.
Forests and Mountain Landscape
One of the distinctive features of Barskoon is the transition from the lower valley into mountain forest and alpine terrain.
Spruce forests occupy parts of the gorge, while higher elevations become increasingly open. The combination of forest, rock walls, waterfalls and snow-covered mountain peaks creates some of the characteristic scenery of southern Issyk-Kul.
Yuri Gagarin and Barskoon
Barskoon is also associated with Yuri Gagarin, the first human in space.
Monuments connected with Gagarin can be seen in the area, including a monument along the road through the gorge. Tourism sources agree on his connection with the Issyk-Kul region, although stories about exactly where and how long he stayed in Barskoon vary.
For the website, it is better to state the documented connection without repeating exaggerated claims that he regularly vacationed deep inside the gorge.
History of Barskoon
The Barskoon valley has a long history as a mountain passage.
The wider Barskoon area was associated with routes connecting the Issyk-Kul basin with the high plateaus and routes toward China. Archaeological remains near the entrance to the valley indicate the importance of the area during earlier periods.
The modern road continues this geographic role by providing access toward the high mountain areas south of Issyk-Kul.
How to Get to Barskoon Gorge
From Tamga
Tamga is one of the closest settlements to the gorge and a convenient base for a short excursion.
The gorge is only several kilometers from the Tamga area, although the exact distance depends on which point of the gorge you are visiting.
From Barskoon Village
The road enters the gorge from the area around Barskoon village.
Public transport along the southern-shore highway can bring travelers to Barskoon village, but visitors generally need private transport, a taxi or a tour to continue up the gorge.
From Karakol
Barskoon Gorge is roughly 90 km from Karakol by road and can be visited as a day excursion.
Best Time to Visit Barskoon Gorge
June to September is generally the most suitable period for hiking and sightseeing in the gorge.
Summer provides the easiest conditions for accessing the waterfalls and upper valley. Snowmelt can also make the waterfalls particularly impressive.
Conditions become more variable outside the main summer season, particularly farther up the gorge.
Practical Information
Allow at least half a day for a visit focused on the lower gorge and waterfalls.
A longer excursion is appropriate if you plan to hike farther into the valley.
Bring:
- sturdy hiking shoes
- water
- sun protection
- warm layers
- rain protection
- food for longer hikes
- a phone or offline map for navigation
The rocks around the waterfalls can be slippery, so take care near the water.
Mobile coverage can be limited in parts of the gorge, so download maps before leaving the main road.
Barskoon Gorge and Barskoon Village
Barskoon village sits near the entrance to the gorge and is a separate entity.
The distinction is useful for SEO:
- Barskoon Village — settlement, local culture, accommodation and gateway
- Barskoon Gorge — mountain valley, waterfalls, hiking and scenery
- Barskoon Waterfalls — major attraction within the gorge
