ToggleToo-Ashuu Pass, Kyrgyzstan
Too-Ashuu Pass is one of the most important mountain crossings in Kyrgyzstan, located on the Bishkek-Osh highway in the Kyrgyz Ala-Too Range. The pass connects the Chuy Valley with the high-altitude Vallée de Suusamyr and is known for its dramatic mountain scenery, steep road switchbacks and the long tunnel carrying the main highway through the mountains.
For travelers, Too-Ashuu is both a major transportation route and a scenic mountain stop on journeys between northern and southern Kyrgyzstan.
About Too-Ashuu Pass
Too-Ashuu, also written as Töö-Ashuu or Teo-Ashuu, means “Camel Pass.” The pass crosses the Kyrgyz Ala-Too mountains and forms part of the Bishkek–Osh road.
The modern highway uses a long tunnel to cross the highest part of the mountain range. The road approaching the tunnel includes numerous bends and steep sections, creating some of the most impressive mountain-road scenery on the route south from Bishkek.

Where Is Too-Ashuu Pass?
Too-Ashuu Pass is in northern Kyrgyzstan, west of Bishkek, on the main road connecting Bishkek with southern Kyrgyzstan.
The northern approach runs through the Karabalta Gorge before climbing toward the pass. After crossing through the tunnel, the road descends toward the broad Suusamyr Valley.
The pass is therefore particularly easy to include in a road trip because it lies directly on the main Bishkek–Osh route rather than requiring a major detour.
What Makes Too-Ashuu Pass Special?
Mountain Road and Switchbacks
The approach to Too-Ashuu is one of the most memorable sections of the Bishkek–Osh highway. The road climbs through a steep mountain landscape with dramatic bends, rocky slopes and wide views over the surrounding valleys.
Too-Ashuu Tunnel
The highway passes through the mountains via a long road tunnel. Different sources report slightly different tunnel lengths, so it is better to describe it simply as a multi-kilometre mountain tunnel rather than relying on one exact figure.
Views Toward Suusamyr Valley
After crossing the mountain range, travelers descend toward Suusamyr Valley, a broad high-altitude valley surrounded by the mountains of the northern Tien Shan.
The contrast between the narrow mountain road and the wide open valley makes Too-Ashuu an important scenic point on the journey.
Hiking Around Too-Ashuu Pass
Too-Ashuu is primarily a road crossing, but the surrounding mountains also offer opportunities for short walks and longer hikes.
The old road above the modern tunnel can be used for hiking or mountain biking, while high-altitude areas around the pass provide access to mountain landscapes away from the main highway.
Nearby Sulutor Lakes are another possible hiking stop. They are located close to the northern side of the tunnel and can be reached by a short walk from the access road.
How to Get to Too-Ashuu Pass
From Bishkek
The easiest way to visit Too-Ashuu is by following the Bishkek–Osh highway west and south from Bishkek.
The road passes through Kara-Balta and the Karabalta Gorge before climbing toward Too-Ashuu.
By Tour
A guided day trip from Bishkek can combine Too-Ashuu Pass with Suusamyr Valley.
This is particularly useful for travelers who want to stop at viewpoints, explore the surrounding landscape and learn more about the area rather than simply passing through on the highway. Tours combining Too-Ashuu and Suusamyr are commonly offered during the warmer months.
