History of Ala-Too Square
Lenin Square
When the square was completed in 1984, it was known as Lenin Square and featured a large monument to Vladimir Lenin.
The square was created as part of the Soviet-era redevelopment of central Bishkek and became an important location for official ceremonies and public events.
After Independence
Following Kyrgyzstan’s independence, the square was renamed Ala-Too.
The monument at its center also changed over time. The Lenin monument was moved to the Old Square in 2003, after which a monument representing freedom occupied the central position. A monument to Manas subsequently replaced it.
The 2000s and 2010s
Ala-Too Square has also been a setting for major public and political events in Kyrgyzstan’s recent history.
Reconstruction
A major reconstruction of Ala-Too Square was completed in 2024.
The renovation included replacement of the stone paving, new fountains, accessibility improvements and a new flagpole. The project was presented by Bishkek City Hall as an effort to improve the square while preserving its historical and cultural significance.
The Manas monument subsequently underwent its own reconstruction, with the renovated monument officially reopened in 2025.
