ToggleAk-Sai Canyons, Kyrgyzstan
Ak-Sai Canyons are a striking natural attraction on the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan. Located near Ak-Sai village, the canyons are characterized by pale and reddish eroded slopes, dry channels and wide views toward the lake.
The area is also known as the Valley of Forgotten Rivers, a name used for the network of dry channels and ravines shaped by erosion. The canyons offer an easy way to experience the unusual dry landscapes of southern Issyk-Kul without a long mountain trek.
About Ak-Sai Canyons
Ak-Sai Canyons form a network of dry channels and eroded valleys descending toward the southern shore of Issyk-Kul.
Unlike the high mountain landscapes found elsewhere in Kyrgyzstan, this area has a dry, semi-desert character. Pale sedimentary slopes, gullies and ridges create a landscape that contrasts strongly with the blue waters of Lake Issyk-Kul.
The canyons are particularly interesting because the landscape reveals the traces of old water channels. Occasional rainfall and surface runoff continue to shape the soft terrain.

What Makes Ak-Sai Canyons Special?
The main attraction is the combination of dry canyon landscapes and views toward Lake Issyk-Kul.
The pale and reddish terrain contains numerous channels and ridges created by erosion. From higher viewpoints, the branching channels become especially visible and create the characteristic appearance of the Valley of Forgotten Rivers.
The landscape is also very different from the greener mountain valleys found elsewhere around Issyk-Kul. This contrast makes Ak-Sai Canyons a useful stop when exploring the southern shore.
What to See at Ak-Sai Canyons
Dry Canyon Channels
The lower parts of the canyon system contain broad dry channels surrounded by eroded slopes. These areas are suitable for short exploratory walks when conditions are dry.
Canyon Viewpoints
Higher points around the canyon provide wider views across the branching ravines and toward Lake Issyk-Kul.
Visitors should stay away from unstable edges and loose slopes, particularly after rain.
Views of Lake Issyk-Kul
One of the most interesting aspects of Ak-Sai is the contrast between the dry canyon landscape and the blue surface of Issyk-Kul.
Depending on the viewpoint and weather, the lake can be seen beyond the canyon landscape.
Hiking at Ak-Sai Canyons
Ak-Sai Canyons do not have one single fixed hiking route.
Visitors can explore parts of the dry channels and walk toward suitable viewpoints. A short walk can take around one to two hours, although the total time depends on the access point and whether you continue toward the lakeshore.
The terrain is generally dry and exposed, with little natural shade. Good footwear, water and sun protection are therefore important.
The route should be adapted to current ground and weather conditions rather than treated as a fixed trail.
How to Get to Ak-Sai Canyons
From Bokonbaevo
Bokonbaevo is one of the most convenient nearby bases for visiting Ak-Sai Canyons.
The canyons are approximately 16 km from the village, although the final route depends on the specific entrance or viewpoint.
From Karakol
Ak-Sai Canyons are located on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul, approximately 130 km from Karakol by road.
They can therefore be included in a southern-shore itinerary connecting Karakol with Bokonbaevo, Skazka Canyon, Barskoon and other attractions.
From Bishkek
From Bishkek, Ak-Sai Canyons are best visited as part of a longer Issyk-Kul itinerary rather than as a short standalone excursion.
The route follows the road toward the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul before turning toward the Ak-Sai area.
By Tour
Ak-Sai Canyons can be visited as part of a southern Issyk-Kul tour.
A guided tour can be particularly useful because the final approach includes unpaved roads and the canyon area does not have one clearly defined entrance.
Best Time to Visit Ak-Sai Canyons
The most comfortable period for exploring Ak-Sai Canyons is generally during the warmer months, particularly from late spring through early autumn.
Summer provides long daylight hours but can be hot and exposed, so early morning or later afternoon can be more comfortable for walking.
Rain requires particular caution because the dry channels can carry runoff after precipitation. If rain is forecast in the surrounding mountains, avoid entering narrow channels and check local conditions before visiting.
Practical Information
Ak-Sai Canyons are a relatively undeveloped natural attraction.
Before visiting, consider bringing:
- Drinking water
- Sun protection
- Comfortable hiking shoes
- Food and snacks
- An offline map
- First-aid supplies
There is limited shade and limited infrastructure inside the canyon area. Mobile reception can also be unreliable.
The final road to some sections of the canyons can be rough and gravelly. Recent weather can affect road conditions, so the suitability of a normal car or 4×4 may change.
Do not enter narrow canyon channels during or immediately after heavy rain because of the possibility of sudden runoff.
Ak-Sai Canyons and Lake Issyk-Kul
Ak-Sai Canyons are particularly easy to combine with a trip around the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul.
A route can combine the canyons with other attractions such as:
- Bokonbaevo
- Skazka Canyon
- Barskoon Waterfall
- Tamga
- Southern Issyk-Kul beaches and villages
This makes Ak-Sai Canyons a useful stop for travelers exploring the southern side of the lake.
