Itinerary

Day 1: Bishkek to Too-Ashuu to Suusamyr to Toktogul

Your winter Jeep adventure begins in Bishkek as you leave the city behind and head into the mountains.

Drive through the spectacular Too-Ashuu mountain corridor, one of the most dramatic sections of the Bishkek–Osh route. Continue into the vast snow-covered Suusamyr Valley, where the landscape opens into a huge alpine basin surrounded by mountains.

This is where the adventure starts to feel remote. Leave the main road where conditions allow and explore snowy side tracks through the valley by 4×4.

Continue toward Toktogul Reservoir, descending from the high mountain landscape into a warmer southern valley.

Overnight: Toktogul

Today takes you deep into southern Kyrgyzstan.

Follow the road along Toktogul Reservoir and the Naryn River before turning toward the mountains of Jalal-Abad Region.

The landscape gradually changes from open mountain valleys to villages, orchards and forested foothills. Continue toward Arslanbob, one of Kyrgyzstan’s most distinctive mountain settlements, famous for its enormous walnut forests and dramatic mountain scenery.

After arrival, take a short winter exploration around the village and lower forest areas. Depending on snow conditions, your Jeep can take you along local mountain tracks to viewpoints above the village.

Overnight: Arslanbob

Wake up surrounded by the snowy mountains and walnut forests of Arslanbob.

Explore the area by 4×4, visiting remote viewpoints and forest tracks where winter conditions allow. Arslanbob is especially atmospheric in winter, when the forests and surrounding mountains are covered in snow.

After the morning adventure, begin the return journey north through the mountain valleys toward Toktogul.

Rather than simply following the main road, use available local tracks and viewpoints to turn the transfer into a genuine Jeep exploration day.

Overnight: Toktogul

Today is a long but spectacular mountain-driving day.

Return through the Suusamyr region and cross back toward central Kyrgyzstan. Continue toward Kochkor before turning east toward Issyk-Kul.

As the landscape changes again, the snowy mountains of the Tian Shan appear around the lake basin.

Continue toward the southern shore, where the scenery becomes wilder and more remote.

In the afternoon, explore local tracks around the southern shore and visit a traditional village if conditions permit.

Overnight: Bokonbaevo / Kaji-Say (southern Issyk-Kul)

This is one of the most exciting days of the tour.

Start with the colorful Skazka (Fairy Tale) Canyon, where red and golden sandstone formations rise above the southern shore of Issyk-Kul. The canyon is particularly dramatic against a winter sky and snow-covered mountains.

Continue east toward Barskoon Gorge. Depending on snow and road conditions, drive into the lower gorge by 4×4 and explore the winter landscape around the frozen waterfalls. The upper Barskoon road becomes much more demanding in winter, so the exact driving point will depend on conditions.

Continue east toward Jeti-Oguz, where the famous red Seven Bulls formations contrast dramatically with the surrounding snow.

Finally, drive to Karakol.

Overnight: Karakol

Your final day begins with a winter Jeep excursion near Karakol.

Depending on snow conditions, explore a nearby mountain valley by 4×4, with opportunities for snow walking, photography and panoramic views of the Terskey Ala-Too mountains.

Return west along Issyk-Kul and continue through Boom Gorge toward Bishkek.

Arrive in Bishkek in the afternoon or evening, completing your winter Jeep adventure across northern and southern Kyrgyzstan.

Tour ends in Bishkek.

Note

This is a winter 4×4 adventure, not a fixed summer-style road trip. Snow, ice, avalanches and temporary road closures can affect mountain access, particularly around high passes and remote valleys. Winter road conditions on the Bishkek–Osh corridor and southern mountain branches can change quickly.

The exact off-road sections will therefore be selected locally according to snow conditions and safety. The priority is to keep the tour adventurous while avoiding unnecessary risk.

FAQ

Is this a real off-road Jeep tour?

Yes. The tour is designed around 4x4 travel and includes selected mountain and village tracks where winter conditions allow.

Which part of Kyrgyzstan does the tour explore?

It combines northern and southern Kyrgyzstan, including Suusamyr, Toktogul, Arslanbob and the southern shore of Issyk-Kul.

Why visit Arslanbob in winter?

Arslanbob offers a very different landscape from Issyk-Kul: huge walnut forests, mountain villages and snowy foothills. It adds a genuine southern Kyrgyzstan experience to the tour.

Can we drive deep into Arslanbob's mountains?

The accessible distance depends on snow and local conditions. The itinerary includes flexible 4x4 exploration rather than promising a specific remote track in advance.

Will we see frozen waterfalls?

Potentially, yes. Barskoon can become a spectacular winter landscape with frozen or partially frozen waterfalls, although access depends heavily on snow and ice conditions.

Can we drive all the way up Barskoon Gorge?

Not necessarily. The upper gorge can become snowbound and includes roads associated with high-altitude and industrial areas. The Jeep will go only as far as conditions safely allow.

Is Skazka Canyon open in winter?

The canyon is on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul and can be visited in winter, although snow and ice may affect the walking areas.

Is Too-Ashuu accessible in winter?

The main route is used in winter, but snow, avalanche control and temporary closures can occur. The itinerary must remain flexible around current conditions.

Do I need off-road driving experience?

No. You will not drive the Jeep yourself. An experienced local driver handles the mountain and winter roads.

How cold will it be?

Temperatures can vary significantly between the high mountain valleys and lower southern areas. Warm winter clothing is essential.

What should I bring?

Bring thermal layers, an insulated waterproof jacket, warm trousers, waterproof boots, gloves, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and personal medication.

Can we ride horses in winter?

Horse riding may be arranged depending on snow conditions, location and local availability.

Is hiking included during winter?

Short winter walks and snow exploration are included where conditions are safe. The tour is not designed as a technical winter trekking expedition.

Is accommodation heated?

Accommodation is selected with winter conditions in mind, but the type of property can vary between guesthouses and hotels depending on availability.

Is travel insurance necessary?

Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance covering winter travel, medical treatment and trip interruption is strongly recommended.
