Itinerary

Introduction to Kolsai Lakes National Park

The Kolsai Lakes are a trio of stunning alpine lakes in southeastern Kazakhstan, nestled in the northern slopes of the Tien Shan Mountains. Located near the Kyrgyzstan border, these lakes are often called the “Pearls of the Northern Tien Shan” thanks to their deep blue color and serene forested surroundings. They lie within the Kolsai-Kaindy National Park, a protected area home to rare wildlife and scenic hiking routes.

How to Get to Kolsai Lake

You can travel from Almaty to Kolsai Lake (approx. 300 km, 5–6 hours) via Kuldja Road, or from Bishkek to Kolsai Lake (approx. 6–7 hours) through the Kegen Border Crossing. We provide cross-border tours including permits and local guides. Most travelers stay overnight in Saty village, which serves as the gateway to the lakes.

Hiking & Horse Trekking at Kolsai Lakes

The hike from Kolsai I to Kolsai II is one of Kazakhstan’s most scenic routes – 8 km of moderate ascent through dense forests, alpine meadows, and river crossings. For those less comfortable hiking, horse trekking is a great alternative. More advanced trekkers can continue to Lake III, but permits and multi-day camping are required.

Kolsai Lake Weather & Elevation

The elevation of Kolsai Lake I is approx. 1,800 meters, while Kolsai II lies at around 2,250 meters. Summer weather is mild (15–22°C during the day), while evenings can be cold. Rain is common in spring and early summer, and snow lingers in shaded areas until June. In winter, the lakes freeze and turn into an otherworldly snow-covered landscape.
