Oak Park, officially known as Chyngyz Aitmatov Park, is one of the oldest and best-known parks in central Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

Known locally as Dubovy Park, the park is characterized by mature oak trees, walking paths, fountains, monuments and an open-air sculpture collection. Its central location makes it an easy stop while exploring Bishkek on foot.

The park’s history dates back to the late nineteenth century, while its open-air sculpture collection developed from sculptors’ symposiums held in Bishkek from 1984 onward.

About Oak Park

Oak Park is one of Bishkek’s historic green spaces.

The first oak trees were planted in the 1890s, and the park developed alongside the growth of the city. Today, its mature trees provide shade in the center of Bishkek and create a contrast with the surrounding streets and buildings.

The park also contains monuments, sculptures and cultural buildings, making it more than simply a recreational green space.

Although officially named after Chyngyz Aitmatov, it continues to be widely known as Oak Park or Dubovy Park.

What to See at Oak Park

Mature Oak Trees

The park’s namesake oak trees are its defining natural feature.

Many of the trees are more than a century old, creating a large shaded canopy in the center of Bishkek.

During summer, the shade makes the park a pleasant place to escape the heat of the surrounding city streets.

Museo de Esculturas al Aire Libre

The most distinctive cultural feature of Oak Park is its State Open-Air Sculpture Museum.

The collection began with the All-Union Sculptors’ Symposium held in Bishkek in 1984. Sculptures created during the symposium remained in the park, and later symposiums added further works.

The collection includes works made from materials such as marble, limestone, dolomite, sandstone and granite.

The outdoor setting means that visitors see the sculptures among trees and greenery rather than in a conventional gallery.

Kurmanjan Datka Monument

A monument to Kurmanjan Datka, an important nineteenth-century Kyrgyz historical figure, is located in the park.

The monument is one of the recognizable landmarks within the park and is useful for visitors interested in Kyrgyz history and public monuments.

Other Monuments and Memorials

Oak Park contains a number of monuments and memorial features representing different periods of Bishkek’s history.

These include memorials associated with Soviet-era history and monuments to prominent historical and cultural figures.

Fountains and Walking Paths

The park includes walking paths, seating areas and fountains.

The combination of mature trees, sculptures and open spaces makes the park suitable for a relaxed walk rather than a structured sightseeing visit.
