ToggleManas Ordo Complex, Talas, Kyrgyzstan
Manas Ordo is a national historical and cultural complex in Talas Region, dedicated to the Kyrgyz epic of Manas and the cultural heritage associated with its legendary hero. The complex is located east of Talas and includes the famous Manas Gumbez mausoleum, museum exhibits, monuments, archaeological remains, and a large cultural landscape.
According to Kyrgyz tradition, the legendary hero Manas was buried here. The mausoleum is therefore an important cultural and pilgrimage site as well as one of the main places associated with the Manas epic.
About Manas Ordo
Manas Ordo was created to preserve and present the cultural heritage surrounding the Manas epic, one of the central works of Kyrgyz oral tradition.
The complex developed from a museum-reserve established in the 20th century. In 1995, during the celebrations marking the supposed 1,000th anniversary of the Manas epic, it was reorganized as the State Manas Ordo Complex. In 2001, it received national status.
Today, Manas Ordo combines historical monuments, cultural exhibits, archaeological remains, and the surrounding landscape.

Where Is Manas Ordo?
Manas Ordo is located in Talas Region in northwestern Kyrgyzstan, approximately 10–15 km east of Talas city, near the village of Tash-Aryk. The complex can be reached by road from Talas.
Its location makes Talas a convenient base for visiting Manas Ordo together with other attractions in the Talas Valley.
Manas Gumbez
The most famous monument at Manas Ordo is the Manas Gumbez, a medieval mausoleum traditionally identified as the burial place of Manas.
The building has ornate brickwork and an inscription associated with Kenizek-Khatun, daughter of Emir Abuka. According to a well-known tradition, the inscription was intended to protect Manas’s grave from enemies by identifying the tomb differently.
The attribution of the tomb to the legendary Manas belongs to the cultural and legendary tradition surrounding the site. The mausoleum itself is a historical monument and is commonly dated to the medieval period.
The Manas Epic
The complex provides an introduction to the Epic of Manas, the enormous oral tradition centered on the hero Manas and his descendants.
The epic has been transmitted through generations by manaschi, professional oral storytellers. Different manaschi have preserved and performed their own versions of the story, making the tradition both literary and living cultural heritage.
For visitors, Manas Ordo is therefore more than a mausoleum: it is a place for understanding one of the most important elements of Kyrgyz cultural identity.
Museum and Cultural Exhibits
Manas Ordo includes a museum dedicated to the Manas epic and related cultural heritage.
The complex has undergone major reconstruction. According to the Kyrgyz Ministry of Construction, the redevelopment project expanded the museum building and introduced new cultural and visitor facilities.
Because the complex has recently been undergoing reconstruction and reopening, visitors should check current opening arrangements, admission information, and which facilities are accessible before travelling.
Archaeological and Historical Features
The Manas Ordo grounds contain more than the main mausoleum.
The wider complex includes archaeological remains, memorial structures, stone figures and other elements connected with the historical and cultural landscape. Sources also describe an ancient burial ground and other archaeological features within the site.
These features make the complex useful for visitors interested in both the Manas tradition and the wider history of the Talas Valley.
